Fordham Institution is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the northeastern United States. It was founded in 1841 and received its name from the Fordham area of the Bronx, in which its first campus was situated. Fordham is also the third-oldest university in the state of New York.

    John Hughes, who was a coadjutor bishop of New York at the time, established what is now known as St. John’s College.
