Which Universities Require BMAT? The Biomedical Admissions Test (BMAT) is a paper-based test that takes two hours and has three parts. It is mostly used to get into medical school, but some other courses, like biomedical sciences and dentistry, also need it. When applying to study medicine, several colleges require you to take the BMAT instead of the UCAT. Learn which ones they are and how they plan to use your score.
Which countries use the BMAT?
Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Poland, Singapore, Thailand, UAE, UK, and the USA.
How Do Universities Use BMAT Scores?
Your BMAT result will be used differently by each BMAT university.
Typically, the outcomes are taken into consideration together with your GCSE scores and UCAS points to determine who moves on to the interview stage. BMAT results may be more important to some universities than others.
BMAT universities in the UK
Brighton and Sussex Medical School
It is true that Brighton and Sussex have a minimum cutoff.
- A mark of three or more for Sections 1 and 2.
- Section 3 must be at least 2.5C or greater.
Your ranking will depend on your BMAT score once you’ve satisfied the minimum requirements. Interview invitations will be extended to the top scorers.
The minimal score for the 2019 application cycle was 16.1, while for the 2018 cycle, it was 16.4.
Imperial College London
To get an interview offer, you need to get a certain score in each of the three parts.
This minimum changes from year to year, but here’s how it usually works out:
Parts 1 and 2: 4.0 to 5.0
Part Three: 2.5
In 2019, the following were the minimum scores:
4.1 in Section 1
4.2 of Section 2
2.5 and grade C in Section 3
Keele University
The only people who are obliged to take the BMAT are international students who will also be asked to pay the overseas cost.
Your performance on the BMAT will determine whether or not you are invited to an interview.
Lancaster University
The combined scores of the three sections of the BMAT are added up to determine the order in which the applicants are rated.
There is no consideration given to the score given for the Quality of English.
Although some students with scores lower than 10.5 were given interviews in 2019, the BMAT cut-off will likely be somewhere around that number. The university has stated that there is a “low probability” that they will do that again.
University College London
There is no minimum requirement that must be met in order to enroll in UCL.
A number of factors, including your personal statement, exam scores, and grade projections, are taken into account.
You will have a lower chance of being awarded a spot in the program if your score on the BMAT is below average; but, you do still have a chance, provided that you did well in all of the other categories.
If your score is lower than these averages, there is a slim chance that you may be invited in for an interview.

University of Cambridge
The admissions committee at Cambridge will consider your application in a more comprehensive manner.
Your BMAT score is not necessarily the deciding factor in whether or not you are interviewed out of the approximately 90 percent of applicants who are considered. Your grades, your personal statement, and your performance in the interview are all taken into account.
Keep in mind that you must submit your application to the college, not the university. Some colleges are more competitive than others, and they all place different amounts of emphasis on the BMAT.
University of Leeds
Your overall performance throughout all three sections will be averaged in Leeds. Part 3’s weight is equivalent to that of sections 1 and 2 combined.
There is no predetermined minimum score to enter; rather, it is based on comparisons.
Even while your BMAT score is taken into consideration, it is not given as much weight as your other test scores and expected grades.
Your GCSE results and anticipated grades are each assigned a score out of a possible 35.
Your performance on the BMAT will be rated out of a possible 5. The top twenty percent of scorers will each receive five points, the next twenty percent will receive four points, and so on down the list.
University of Oxford
While Cambridge interviews ninety percent of applicants, Oxford only meets with thirty percent of those who apply. Your GCSEs and your BMAT score will each be given the same amount of weight in the decision-making process.
This indicates that excellent GCSE scores can make up for an average BMAT score, and the same is true in the opposite direction.
The weighting of the individual sections of the BMAT is not uniform; for example, in 2020, sections 1 and 2 each received a weighting of 40 percent. In the year 2020, the weighting for Section 3 was twenty percent. In Section 3, your score on the quality of the content is given twice as much weight as the mark you received on the quality of the English.
